Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a small, evergreen woody shrub with yellow flowers & red fruits and grows wildly in all drier parts of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and North-western plains of India. Popularly known as ‘Winter cherry’ in English, the herb is known as “Asgandha’ in Hindi, Gujarati, Kashmiri, Urdu & Panjabi, Angarberu in Kannada, ‘Amukkuram’ in Gujarati, ‘Pennerugadda’ in Telugu, and ‘Amukkaramkizangu’in Tamil. Traditionally, the roots are extensively used across most parts of South Asia for its diverse medicinal value.
