What is Zumba® Fitness?

Zumba is great for the body and the mind!

Zumba is a fitness program inspired by dance moves and was created by Alberto Perez aka Beto a Columbian dancer and choreographer. It is often mistaken to be a dance form, but the word “Zumba” has no particular meaning, it was just chosen to be a brand name for the fitness program.


It is a cardio activity, interval training program and the duration of class is about 60minutes that include 12-15 songs from dance styles such as salsa, merengue, cumbia, hip hop, belly dance, bhangra and much more.

The origin

During the mid-90s Beto used to conduct regular aerobic classes. When he arrived at the studio to conduct the class, he realized that he had forgotten to bring his aerobics music. Instead of cancelling his class, he went back to his car and picked up the tapes. He improvised his aerobics class using the Latin American music that was in his car. The students loved the class and this format of the class soon became successful. He then moved to the United States in 2001 and teamed up with 2 other people and launched his company.

Zumba first sold home workout DVDs in 2002, in 2005 the Zumba Academy was launched which provided trainings to license instructors to conduct their own Zumba Fitness class, a clothing line called Zumba Wear was launched in 2007 and 2010 Zumba Fitness Video games were launched. Zumba is now in over 180 countries with over 15 million people taking up Zumba classes around the world.

My experience with Zumba

Having been a Zumba Instructor since 2010 – taking classes at various fitness studios, corporate offices and apartments around Bangalore and also being certified in Zumba Toning, Aqua, Step, Sentao and Kids – I have seen how every class has received positive feedback and all the participants loved attending Zumba classes.

At the end of the class everyone leaves with a big smile on their face and they want to come back for more. At the end of a long hectic day, conducting Zumba helped me de-stress and lift my mood. It has also helped me enhance my social skills. I always wear “Zumba wear” to my classes as they are bright and colourful and this also plays a role in lifting my mood during class. I love Zumba and it spreads positive vibes across the dance floor. Workout attendance drops with monotony but in Zumba the attendance only increases as there is no boredom, every class is different with different moves and different songs.

It has proven to be a successful program and mainly because the class doesn’t make you feel like you are working out – instead it feels like you are grooving to some peppy dance numbers in a night club. Just like a party!

Health benefits of the program

Zumba is a great cardio vascular activity. It also has specific moves that target the core hence shaping the mid-section. To be a part of a Zumba Fitness class one doesn’t have to be a dancer, Zumba is made for everyone. The steps are easy to follow and made in such a way that it ensures all the participants are having fun while losing weight and burning calories. You burn an average of 400 calories without even realizing it. One might be shy to dance but Zumba helps boost self-confidence and self-esteem and making you ready to rock the dance floor. The biggest and best benefit of Zumba is the weight loss.

Weight loss becomes easier when you’re excited about exercise and Zumba does exactly that, it keeps you hooked and eventually you are addicted. Zumba gives you a healthy body with a healthy mind!
